He is the Michael Pitfield Chair, Division Head, and Endowed Chair of Research in the Division of Cardiac Surgery, University of Ottawa. Ruel received his M.D. degree cum laude in 1994, and his certification in Cardiac Surgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2000. He subsequently pursued minimally invasive cardiac surgery and basic research training at Harvard University, where he also completed a Masters in Public Health, with a focus in Quantitative Methods. Ruel later returned to Harvard for leadership courses. Ruel’s appointments at the University of Ottawa are as Full Professor in the Department of Surgery (primary affiliation) and in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (cross-appointed affiliation). In September 2010, Ruel became Assistant-Dean, Clinical and Translational Research, at the University of Ottawa, where he brought important new initiatives in translational and patient-oriented research, including the Translational Research Grant program. Ruel is the Chair of the Heart Transplantation program at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. He is also the Editor of a well-regarded 600-page textbook on Cardiac Surgical Techniques by Elsevier, which has sold nearly 10,000 copies worldwide and is now in its second edition.

Dr. Jodi Edwards is the Director of the Brain and Heart Nexus Research Program at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and Assistant Professor in the School of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Edwards is a cardiovascular epidemiologist whose research focuses on risk assessment and predictive modelling, specifically for the identification of novel cardiac markers of stroke and dementia risk. Dr. Edwards completed her doctoral training at the University of British Columbia in 2014, were she was awarded the CIHR Institute of Neurosciences and Mental Health Brain Star Award for her doctoral work and went on to do a Post-Doctoral Fellowship with Dr. Sandra Black at the Sunnybrook Research Institute in Toronto, prior to joining the Ottawa Heart Institute in 2017. She has published extensively in leading clinical journals including Stroke, Neurology, and the Journal of the American Heart Association and is a member of the Expert Advisory Group for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

I lead a research group, experienced in population-based epidemiological studies of health effects, in particular cancers, associated with chemical exposures (arsenic in drinking water, aflatoxins) and chronic microbiological infections (HPV, Helicobacter pylori, Salmonella typhi). Our field-epidemiology infrastructure includes strong ties with local universities, health systems and international collaborators. We actively participate in the public health implementation of our findings. We designed and conducted the first National Heath Survey, and the first Chilean population-based large cohort and biobank of chronic diseases, the MAUCO cohort. We run a high impact master program in Epidemiology and in 2019 we will open the first Chilean PhD in Epidemiology program.

May Griffith is a professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Montreal, and holds the Caroline Durand Foundation Research Chair in Cellular Therapy. She is best known for her bench to bedside translational research in biomimetic materials. Her current research is in the development of soft materials based on collagen and its analogs, for regenerative medicine applications. She has led a multi-national, interdisciplinary team that developed the world’s first cell-free corneal implants that successfully promoted regeneration of corneal tissues and nerves. She continues to work on improvements for use in corneas with more severe pathologies that are currently deemed not treatable, by developing new materials, incorporation of nano-delivery systems, 3D bioprinting and surface patterning techniques. The biomaterials developed are also being tested for use in theranostics, and as pro-regeneration scaffolds in other organ systems in collaboration with other researchers, e.g. skin and cardiac regeneration.
